What version of the Imagewriter driver are you using?  Have you selected the Imagewriter in the Chooser DA?  If you are really are using the right cables and you have the right driver, it should work fine.  I've used my old Imagewriter with a Plus, an Mac II, and now with my II fx with no problems that aren't inherent in this printer.
