OK, I missed the beginning of this thread, but it looks to me like the "magic cookie" mapping orphaned TEXT and PICT to ttxt (TeachText) is 'fmap' 17010 in the 7.0b1 Finder. Notice that there is, in general, no way to gain write access to that resource in a running 7.0 system -- the resource fork is, uh, busy. The System file would be better, and a small file, or better, an AppleEvent to "Register" or "unregister" the foster parent would be better still. Larry, I appreciate that not EVERYTHING can go in. But I'll suggest that the "foster application" idea is a nice thing that ought to be done thoroughly before one of us cooks up some horrendous hack... =Ned Horvath= ehorvath@attmail.com
