You do not need TeX 3.0 or any of the VF software to use dvips 546 and VF PostScript fonts--- dvips does all of the work. For 1270 fonts, I highly recommend you bring up METAFONT. If you've got TeX working, MF is easy. 1270 dpi fonts, even in PK format, are *big*. -tom
