Subject: Why can't I look at directories anymore?

	I used to be able to look at the contents of a directory in many
different ways:

		$ cat -v .
		$ strings .
		$ od .

None of these work under RISC Ultrix 4.0.  They work fine under 2.0 on our
VAX.  Why were these operations disabled??  I want to look at my directories.
