McAuliffe was on the lower deck Resnik was on the flight deck. Inter-crew communications are via helmets (from what I understand of ascent and reentry). A personal tape recorder would NOT have picked up any remark to Resnik. To believe the validity of such a recording, one would have to assume that orbiter communications were active and that they had power to function.
