(If you are not a student yourself, I would be grateful if you would please pass this information on to any relevant students you might know). Briefly, the project involves analyzing the results from previous user interface experiments for various interesting patterns. A major part of the project is to locate relevant experiments from the mass of previous HCI work and to recode them with respect to our focus of attention. Main requirements are: * graduate or undergraduate student * reasonably broad, general knowledge of the HCI field * knowledge of methods for user testing and experiments (enough to evaluate such studies, not to carry them out) * some basic statistics would be helpful (no advanced statistics required) * ability to quickly find relevant information in a scientific paper * motivated to work industriously and mostly independently, though with advice and guidance * willingness to do some grunt work (there are a lot of previous studies that have to be evaluated and recoded) Major advantages of this position include: * embedded in a very rich HCI environment * interesting usability engineering research project that can be completed in one summer * salary, housing at a local college, and transportation between the college and Bellcore * travel expenses to and from New Jersey Bellcore has an official summer student program, so special application forms are required. You can get these forms by by contacting Bellcore, University Relations 444 Hoes Lane Piscataway, NJ 08854 Tel. (908) 699-2074. Please make sure to send the original application to this address and a copy directly to me. If possible, applications should reach Bellcore by February 15, 1991, but late applications may possibly be considered. -- Jakob Nielsen, Bellcore MRE-2P370, 445 South St, Morristown, NJ 07962-1910, USA email nielsen@bellcore.com, fax +1-201-538-9093
