Regarding UNIX dump/retore and Oracle Databases

We (UBC's University Computing Services) have heard that there have been
problems with restoring Oracle databases with UNIX restore, if the dump took
place with Oracle running, even if there was no activity on the database.

We would have expected that if there was no database activity that a UNIX dump
of the files should be restoreable (with UNIX restore) and result in a
consistent database.
 
Has anyone had any experience with this?
