Currently, you can't switch between PS and PCL through software with the HP and Adobe cartridges; and it is recommended that you turn off the printer before you remove or insert the cartridge. On the PacificPage cartridges, it is possible to switch emulations through software, ie. without manual intervention. The escape sequence &l32259.1057J switches from PCL to PS, while &l1057.32259J switches from PS to PCL. I had planned to recommend the use of PacificPage's printer emulation software switching on some networked printers. But the "soft reset" is indeed a hard reset with the LaserJet going through the initialization process everytime you switch printer emulations. Perhaps the PacificPage cartridge I have is old (Version 3.12) and there is newer firmware that switches printer emulations in a more graceful and less time-consuming way. --- Ed Garay
