Assuming that the free BSD code refers to the 386 port being documented in Dr Dobbs, there is bad news from the BSD BOF at the last Usenix in Dallas, the BSD folks said the article is in error, there is still ATT code in the BSD kernel and they don't have an estimate of when it will be gone. GNU announced (also at a BOF) that they have come to an agreement with CMU on a Mach licence and they would be starting work on a GNU kernel but again no estimate of when it would be availible (but I got the impression they didn't think it would be soon).
