This product is also called the tensor, Kronecker or direct product. The elements of the product matrix follow the so-called lexicographical ordering, the gist of which may be gathered from the abbreviated notation (where A and B are matrices): A (x) B = A(1,1)B A(1,2)B .... A(2,1)B A(2,2)B .... .. .. .... Outer products of this sort provide a way of building higher-rank tensors from lower rank ones, and typical applications include coupling of spin angular momenta.
