I have been through Dungeon Master about 15 times or so, and that method is the properly documented one as posted by the Software authors! There are a couple of other methods, which I have been told work also. The method you have described doesn't even sound like the same game! Fireballs? Standing in the doorway? WhatEVER are you talking about? Believe me, that is the easiest and most direct way.
