From what I can tell when attacking with a catapult no all your
men are still fighting.  It talkes 1 guy to manage each catapult
you have.  How you can tell is say your captain has the cataplut
then camp outside of town and then go to attack town.  The
army will attack while the captain remains outside the town
firing the catapult.  (This is a good move anyways because
I've found it easier to win combats when your captain stays
outside of direct hand-to-hand.).  Also since your captain
starts with a bow you can always camp outside of town before
attacking it and he will fire from a distance.
