My modem port was partially zapped by a lightning-induced (probably) spike through the phone line that killed my (out of warranty) modem. Fortunately, only the receive line was zapped, so I can use the modem port for my printer, which only has to be sent to, and plug the modem into the printer port, which is still good. I have a Plus and I have also opened it do perform minor repairs, but I have not, for example, been able to buy a replacement sound chip. (I tried mail - no good.)
