I am looking for a way to convert 8 bit (or 24 bit) PICT data (or file)
into 8 bit Gray-scale or 1bit dithered-black-and-white PICT data (or
file).

I imagine that the way should be to set-up an offscreen Bitmap with
desired color/B-W setup then CopyBits to it with appropriate copy
mode, for example, dithering etc.... but

Am I on the right track?  Is there any example code available?
I know that there are a couple of codes available on how to use
offscreen stuff in general, but have not seen ones which demonstrate
what I want to do.
