The Desktop Manager overcomes some limitations imposted by the normal Desktop, and makes opening large folders faster. You can get the Desktop Manager from the Oscar archive on apple.com in /pub/dts/mac/hacks/Oscar.hqx. Have you re-built your desktop recently?
