I figured it out this morning and an hour or two later the correct solution (thanks for all the other helpful suggestions though) came in from Peter Jaspers-Fayer, SOFPJF@vm.uoguelph.ca . A few days ago I created /usr/etc/resolv.conf . I had an incorrect domain name in it. A look at SYSLOG showed bootp gethostbyname failures and eventually bootp/udp server failing (looping), service terminated. I then suspected my new resolv.conf, and that turned out to be it.
