Granted, and I definitely think that 10646 (or something similar, like Unicode) is the only effective approach for many applications. It certainly looks like an improvement over ISO IS 2022 :)... Don't get me wrong--I like the ISO 8859 code sets, as far as they go. What I was objecting to was the idea that "archaic" characters weren't useful to represent in electronic form.
