Summary: I'm thinking of doing this Keywords: suggestion Message-ID: <2891@redstar.cs.qmw.ac.uk> Date: 4 Feb 91 11:00:13 GMT Sender: usenet@cs.qmw.ac.uk Lines: 64 Nntp-Posting-Host: whitesand It looks to me as though comp.unix.aux is taking off, so I've been thinking about doing a "Top 10 Most Frequent A/UX Questions" posting: the kind of thing that you see on comp.unix.questions: I presume that the current version gets mailed every 2 months with a 3 month expiry time. I'm prepared to do something like that if it doesn't involve me in too much admin (or flaming!). What are the current questions (and answers)? Well, a tentative list is: 1) How do I format and partition my new SuperLarge Frizz-B disk drive for use with A/UX? Ans: Chat about partitions and dp. A/UX doesn't use the MacOS driver installed on the disk. Silverlining is currently the favourite utility. 2) My compressed file gets corrupted when I transfer it on a floppy Ans: File of type TEXT get CR/LF translations. Use type 'BIN ' instead. 3) How do I make a modem work properly with A/UX? Ans: Can't remember - is this still a problem with 2.0? 4) How can I use LocalTalk Macs as terminals to an A/UX machine? Ans: You can't. Speculation about ADSP. 5) How much memory/disk/chutzpah required to run A/UX? Ans: standard partition sizes, list of Macs capable of running A/UX, some annecdotal "we do this" examples. 6) Where can I get gcc, g++, emacs etc from? Ans: IP addresses for various FTP archives (apple.com?, wuarchive.wustl.edu and others?) together with known current versions and warning about sending bug reports to Stallman! 7) I can't compile this program because "table overflow"? Ans: A/UX cc, cpp and as have fixed sized tables, so you need to use the appropriate flag (-A?) or use gcc instead. 8) That uucp problem Ans: Can't remember, I'd have to look in the archives. It's been a few days since I had this idea (late one sleepless night), and I've forgotten what the other questions were. Please mail me with encouragement or abuse, with additional questions or some answers. If I get a generally positive response (apathy will be treated as negative) then I'll do it. -- William Roberts ARPA: liam@cs.qmw.ac.uk Queen Mary & Westfield College UUCP: liam@qmw-cs.UUCP Mile End Road AppleLink: UK0087 LONDON, E1 4NS, UK Tel: 071-975 5250 (Fax: 081-980 6533)
