  I would suggest you take a look at the Simple Network Management Protocol
(SNMP), which can be used for monitoring of the type you describe (and,
indeed, is used for such monitoring on over 1,000 workstations and fileservers
here at Project Athena).

  Internet Request For Comment 1157 describes the protocol.  There are several
implementations of it on the market, including one by NYSERNet Inc., which is
the one we use here at Athena.
