Depends tho on how much you want to learn about graphics programming and how much you just want to use a tool. ) Note also that the essential documentation ) for much of X is free, the notable exception being the Asente & ) Swick Toolkit book. [Incidentally, will the *roff source for Asente ) & Swick be included free in R5, the way Scheifler & Gettys et al. ) is now?]) I must recommend that any beginner to X NOT try to learn it through the MIT documentation but purchase the books by O'Reilly, Jones, and something for his toolkit.
