    What is the current status of the multi-buffering extension to X?

About the same as in R4.  We are still waiting for sufficient proof
of concept, meaning implementations where buffering is done in hardware,
and implementations using the stereo mechanism.

    I'd like to get the latest documents

The latest public document is still the one in R4.

    and find out if there is a mailing list for discussion.

There isn't a public mailing list devoted to this topic.
