I have received lots of responses about this subject. Thank you,
netters. My favorite solution is the program xselection by Richard
Hesketh. I put

 "print selection"      f.exec "xselection PRIMARY | lpr"

in one of my twm menus, which makes it very painless to invoke.

Judging from the volume of replies, both by email and in the news, this
question should go into the FAQ.
