From the Newark Star Ledger February 4, 1991 'Star Trek VI' turning into 'Mission Impossible' by Marilyn Beck and Stacy Jenel Smith HOLLYWOOD - Here's the latest on "Star Trek VI" - and it's not good news for Trekkies: Leonard Nimoy reveals that Paramount is having serious second thoughts about proceeding with production of what's been announced as the last of the big-screen "Star Trek" epics, and that at this point the project "is kind of dead in the water." "Star Trek VI," which was originally slated to go before the cameras last fall, has been awaiting the completion of a script. It's got one now, "a fine script by Nicholas Meyer," says Nimoy. "But last week things came untracked - Paramount decided it wanted to rethink the project. I think it, like a lot of studios, is re-evaluating what the marketplace is all about, what it should make and at what price. I'm waiting for a phone call from the Paramount people about the film, but at this point ... well, I suppose it could go either way." The actor/filmmaker feels "VI" could be made for less than the $30 million-plus "Star Trek V," which, he acknowledges, "didn't do terribly well." However, he stresses, there are still some big questions marks. Though casting notices went out this month saying there will be an April start date, the studio, he reveals, has never negotiated a "Star Trek VI" deal with either him or William Shatner. -- [=============================================================================] Dan Koft Email: koft@elbereth.rutgers.edu RU-CS, Rutgers University {backbone}!rutgers!elbereth!koft SERC, Busch Campus Phone: (908) 932-3216 Piscataway, NJ 08855 [=============================================================================] -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Edited by Jim "The Big Dweeb" Griffith - the official scapegoat for r.a.s.i.
