Actually, the ability of the system to see through desert sand is
related to the frequency of the radar. A SLR (Side Looking Radar),
commonly used by the military for reconaissance, should also be
able to "see through the sand" if it is at the same frequency
as the SAR. The advantage of the SLR is that it requires a less
sophisticated radar, and far less sophisticated signal processing.
The advantage of the SAR is that it can have much higher resolution.
