A 5th alternative (besides the 4 suggested recently by Tomas Rokicki):
get Ghostscript and let it do the rendering for you.  Looks awful at
small point sizes, good at large ones.  (Small points sizes will look
a lot better in the next release, though -- I found a simple hack to
undo most of the extra boldness.)
