One configuration of ConMan will give you INVISIBLE, non-blocking typeahead (i.e., it holds typed characters internally until nothing is outputting), and that's what I use for all my shell windows. ConMan in ANY configuration, if I remember rightly, will also give you ^S/^Q to pause and restart the display.
