Hi  - we have an ancient PDP-11 driving a microprobe.  We are
trying to understand some of the software and OS instructions
but have few sparse manuals.   

One easy question    ..    during linking the .com file contains
a line  
   $SHORT

Nowhere can we find a reasonable explanation.  Could some PDP 
wizard give us a quick explanation?
