Following the instructions on the man page for xmodmap I added:

XTerm*ttyModes:	erase	^?

to my .Xdefaults.  This doesn't seem to have any effect.  Why not?

Another strange thing that happened is that while I was trying to work
around this problem, I stuck a:

stty erase ^?

in my .kshrc.  The result was that the xterm window will appear and then,
before any prompt appears, disappear.
