I de-installed a whole lot of 'em (after struggling for hours to figure out which font it was -- I am very dismayed that you can crash the window server so easily as to have a font in there (as a space) that doesn't exist any more) and it all works fine now. It might be Kallestar -- that doesn't come up on the screen very well for me. I since canned it.
