I read from gnu.ghostscript.bug that the new version which will be released
in April will have HP laser jet driver. So I think one can save the $225
or more. Is this a misinterpretation? 

The dvips I ftp'ed uses emTeX's font library. In addition to that, it has
postscript fonts [*.vf].

Ghostscript 2.1 from prep.ai.mit.edu is a good enough postscript previwer.
There is a msdos excutable and it works with VGA/EGA. All the souce codes
are given with distribution.

I am looking forward to GS 2.2 which will support HPLJ.  With
emTeX

I do think I have built an complete enviorment for TeX on msdos.
