I don't know about "A Gentle Intro. to TeX", but there is a relatively
new book out called "TeX for the Impatient" that I would recommend highly
as an intro/reference alternate to The Knuth "TeXbook".  The author is
Paul W. Abrahams.  It is out in paperback (Addison-Wesley).
