Data compression is meaningless outside of a computer context; it is arguably as much a part of computer science as compiler writing or microprocessor design. Although little practical cryptography is done without computers these days, for historical reasons cryptography is viewed as having an existance outside of the aegis of computer science. Sci.compression wouldn't be as much of an affront to the naming system as, say, comp.singles, but it would be silly to use it when comp.compression fits the comp.* hierarchy to a T. Even better, why not use the shorter but equally descriptive "comp.compress"? -Ed Hall edhall@rand.org
