I object to your wording of "YOU CAN'T!" WRT redirection of stdout and stderr separately in csh. You CAN, it just requires some thought. It's not like Bourne Shell which allows 1>outputfile 2>errfile... Agreeably this is one of the shortcomings of csh, and I know that this is why many prefer a sh-like interface to that of csh. But that's a religious issue which is better left dormant, unless you want to tell me which shell(s) I can and cannot use.
