It's a pity Joni Mitchell herself seems forgotten.  She have really had
a profound impact on many of the later singers, female as well as male.
But then she probably have been more famous for her lyrics than her music.

To mention a few others,

Jennifer Varnes
Emmylou Harris (!!)
Maire Brennan (of Clannad)
Linda Ronstadt (well, to some extent)
