There is an excellent article (An Elementary C Cost Model by Bentley,
Kernighan, and Vanwyk) in the February issue (Vol.9 No. 2) of Unix
Review that supposedly will enable the reader to run an experiment on
his/her machine which would estimate the cost of a given operation to
within 25 percent.
