A possible alternative to TIOCNOTTY is the following:

                        f=open("/dev/tty",O_RDWR);
#ifdef hpux
                        setpgrp();
#else
                        (void)ioctl(f, (int)TIOCNOTTY, (char *)0);
#endif


The command setpgrp() does disassociate with the process's tty.
