How many different display modes can IBM do?

I am not all too familiar with IBM, but when I fiddling around with the\
'screen' command in the IBM MS-Basic, it changes the display modes...

What about for EGA, CGA, VGA, SuperVGA?  are they very different?

Are the VGA cards downward compatible with EGA and CGA displays?
