Is the disk compress part of PCTOOLS able to use extended memory?
Running MS-DOS 4.01 on a Gateway 2000 386 with a 200MB hard drive,
PCTOOLS seems to run out of memory early in the analysis phase.  (At
least it doesn't damage anything; it pops up a message and quits.)
