One alternative to needing a slot, would be to use a pocket fax modem.
These usually have 25 pin connectors that plug directly into the serial
port without a using a cable.  Check out the fax version of the World
Port modem and the JTFax modem.

Some companies make special fax modems for the proprietary modem slot
of some laptops as well.
