Iw as quite suprised to find out that cron reads your profiles (/etc/profile and $HOME/ profile). You might want to put an "if not a tty" don't do this stuff section in your profile files. On the same subject I thought that the cron reading of .profile had been taken out of sysVr3 because of security but it is there in AIX 3.1.
