I've used a number of Gateway 2000 machines with DOS 4.01 and Windows 3.0. Not one problem. So using DOS 4.01 should be fine. I've heard that SHARE can cause problems. I don't use it with no apparent ill-effects. With problems like yours, I usually resort to SPINRITE. I burn-in a disk for 24-48 hours in the extreme-mode of SPINRITE.
