I have binaries for an X application program that expects a color 
display.  There doesn't seem to be any way to tell the application not 
to use color (at least it's not documented).  Is there a way to tell 
my B&W server how to map colors (basically, black -> white, everything 
else -> black)?  

I tried:
u/nfs $ u/bin/X11 $ xset -display unix:0 p 1 white
xset:  cannot set pixel values in read-only StaticGray visuals
