Since the offensive opened in early December, Britain has taken 380 tanks, 850 guns, 241 aircraft, and 133,295 prisoners of war. Her losses amount to only 555 dead and missing, 1373 wounded, and 10 tanks destroyed. On the other hand, the British supply line is stretched to its limit and most of Wavell's vehicles require maintenance. Thai-Indo Chinese peace talks begin in Tokyo, as Japan directs both parties to conclude a permanent settlement to replace their armistice of 31 January. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Bill Thacker military@att.att.com Send submissions for "50 Years Ago" to military-request@att.att.com "New York City is a veritable powder-keg, and our entry into this war might touch it off." - William J.
