Gee, it can take more than three seconds just to get the handset
seated in the acoustic coupler.  (Yes, there are still some of THOSE
around.)  Some folks *insist* on waiting for the answer tone
themselves, just in case a real person answers instead.  Mustn't be
rude, now, mustn't we?
