I'd never argue against using Hayes modems on technical grounds (hey, my system uses a Smartmodem 2400!), but HST users can just set a bit in S15 (bit value 8, I believe) to cut buffers to 128 bytes... but only for non-MNP callers. BTW, I would have thought that 256 bytes was not enough to allow decent MNP5 and V.42bis data compression.
