Either VMD or NASAGISS should be making sure the domain is qualified. However, since they are not, you have to deal with the problem. I see you are using sendmail/IDA. Pick up the latest version from uxc.cso.uiuc.edu. You will then discover that your sendmail will attempt to correct the problem, by rewriting SYKLB@NASAGISS as SYKLB%NASAGISS@vmd.cso.uiuc.edu You should be able to reply normally to the latter address.
