Ahh, if your friend has gotten -150, then he has done quite well for
himself then, what he needs to do is to have someone boot up game for him 
as he prepares the joystick (there is a .5 ns delay between when you 
insert the disk and when the game starts playing (use it wisely :))

O.K, first the moves you want to make are left,up fire (rapid fire works 
well here), and then jump, followed by holding down the button and making
a circle with the joystick (ala hybris/Battle Squadron)
That should get him about 50 points and 5 seconds into the game, from there
you just have to practice (I have forgotten what to do next, I just go
on instinct now, (and my dog ate the dungeon maps (yes, the dungeon
maps))

If you have a wall sized map of the world (topographical) set up, you will
be using it in level 3... (a lot!)
