I have a Great project for a Hardware type person.
Experiment with FIBER OPTICS.

I have several extra Hewlet Packard
FIBER OPTIC Receiver and Transmitter sets

These can be used to build a fiber optic link between printers, or other
computers.
They could also be used to build burglar alarm systems.


The parts are:

HFBR-1404 (SMA) TRANSMITTER
The transmitter contains a 820nm emitter designed and packaged for fiber
optic applications.

HFBR-2402 (SMA) RECEIVER
The receiver has an integrated photo IC containing a photodetector
and DC amplifier driving an open collector Schottky output transistor.

The HFBR-1404 TRANSMITTER sells originally for $53.60
The HFBR-2402 RECEIVER sells originally for $43.90

You can have the matched set of one transmitter and one receiver 
with data sheet for $40.

I have several sets available still.
