Well to start with the port on the HP48SX gives standard RS232 signals.
So no you dont need special hardware  just a cable with the correct ends.
Here is where the  problem developes.   The connector on the HP end is a
very nonstandard type and so far seems to have few sources other than from
HP attached to their very expensive cable.

The calculator uses kermit protocol and can transfer from 300? to 9600 baud.
I'm not absolutely sure about the 300 but the 9600 is correct.
