It should be: ---s--x--x 1 root bin 531932 Aug 4 1990 /usr/bin/X11/xterm Also, the /usr/lib/X11/Xconsoles file should contain a list of the seats (displays) which are allowed to grab console output. If yours is a single head system, a single entry of * will work just fine. Be sure Xconsoles is readable.
